Our future

Stækkaðu framtíðina invites all primary schools across the country to take part in the ‘Our Future’ survey. Through this initiative, Iceland will become the first nation to gather responses from students in Years 1–10 about how they envision their future, their hopes and expectations for careers and education, as well as the influence of school, family, location, and social media on their outlook.

Drawing the future and Your Voice

Two methods will be used to tailor the survey to different age groups, both based on an international framework and developed by the research department of Education and Employers in the UK:

Drawing the Future for grades 1-7:
Children will draw pictures of what they want to be when they grow up and answer brief questions about their expectations and influences.

Your Voice for grades 8-10:
Young people will complete an online survey and have the opportunity to write about important topics. Some will be asked to create their own videos related to these subjects.

Why?

Objectives

  • Understand the career aspirations of children and young people in Iceland.
  • Examine the factors influencing their hopes and expectations, including the impact of social media.
  • Identify key issues that matter to our young people.
  • Analyse differences in aspirations based on location and background.
  • Explore which school subjects capture their interest and relate to their future plans.
  • Help young people recognise the opportunities available to them.
  • Assess how young people’s expectations align with Iceland’s economic needs.

Impact and Benefits
The findings will provide valuable insights into the future outlook of children and young people, aiding educational policy development and supporting the labour market in meeting young people’s career expectations. The results will compare the aspirations of young people with future employment trends and economic growth, while also addressing topics such as health, family, equality, and societal challenges.

Public Presentation
The results will be presented publicly, and there will be an exhibition showcasing the students’ drawings, writings, and videos.
