Our future

Stækkaðu framtíðina invites all primary schools across the country to take part in the ‘Our Future’ survey. Through this initiative, Iceland will become the first nation to gather responses from students in Years 1–10 about how they envision their future, their hopes and expectations for careers and education, as well as the influence of school, family, location, and social media on their outlook.

Drawing the future and Your Voice

Two methods will be used to tailor the survey to different age groups, both based on an international framework and developed by the research department of Education and Employers in the UK:

Drawing the Future for grades 1-7:
Children will draw pictures of what they want to be when they grow up and answer brief questions about their expectations and influences.

Your Voice for grades 8-10:
Young people will complete an online survey and have the opportunity to write about important topics. Some will be asked to create their own videos related to these subjects.

Why?

Goals

  • Gain a better understanding of what children and young people in Iceland want to be when they grow up.

  • Explore how social media and other factors may influence their hopes and expectations.

  • Identify what matters most to young people.

  • Examine whether location and background affect their dreams for the future.

  • Discover which school subjects spark their interest and how these relate to their future plans.

  • Help young people see the opportunities available to them.

  • Investigate whether their dream jobs align with the needs of the Icelandic labour market.

Impact and Benefits

The results will help us better understand what young people want to do in the future. They will inform the development of the Stækkaðu framtíðina project and may also help the labour market recognise which jobs are likely to be in demand.

Public Presentation

The findings will be shared publicly, along with a fun and engaging exhibition featuring drawings, written reflections, and videos created by students.
